TO LOVE A POET – POEM BY SHULAMITE AGBOOLA

To Love a poet
Don’t fall in love with a poet…
He might be falling in love with another lines to be written…
He makes you lovelorn…
You will sit by yourself wishing you understood when he said…
“you are my inspiration, you make me want to write more”
And when you raised your head,
there he is…
His face buried in his book like a kiss,
Holding his pen with all the love in the world…
Don’t fall in love with a poet…
When he looks at you, there stands a piece to be penned…
You speak of all your concerns but it falls on a transfixed listener…
He has his eyes on you but he isn’t looking at you…
Do not take the flattering of a poet to heart
His words will make you go the miles
His hands holding yours but it feels like a pen…
The sweat on your palm feels like a ink drip…
And you feel like his books when he bury his head in the hallow of your neck…
If you ever fall in love with a poet…
Believe not a word when a poet tells you… “You are the most important thing in my life”
Their pen is what have their heart
And their books is their most cherished possession…
Just whisper into his soul with honest surrender…”I’ll be glad to be next to your pen and your books will have my respect”…
