The Rhodes Scholarship is a postgraduate award supporting exceptional students from around the world to study at the University of Oxford.There are two Rhodes Scholarships available each year for Global.

The Global Scholarships allow eligible candidates from the rest of the world (i.e. not eligible under any other Rhodes Scholarships Constituency) to apply for a Scholarship, subject to the nomination.

Ninety five outstanding young women and men are awarded the Scholarship each year, from 20 Rhodes constituencies (64 countries) worldwide Rhodes Scholars study at the world-class University of Oxford, ranked first internationally in the Times Higher Education rankings 2017.

Scholars may pursue any full-time postgraduate degree (subject to limited restrictions) offered by the University of Oxford, for a duration of 2-3 years. Whilst at Oxford Scholars enjoy a comprehensive Rhodes Character, Service & Leadership programme, inclusive of retreats, workshops, conferences, as well as many discussion and social events at Rhodes House, Oxford. The Rhodes Scholarship is a lifelong, intergenerational fellowship of over 5000 individuals, resident in over 100 countries worldwide.

You can request and receive a nomination through the application form itself – you will not be able to submit an application for a Global Rhodes Scholarship unless a nomination from your institution has been received. 

Your eligibility for the Global Scholarship must also be confirmed by a member of the Rhodes House team. This will be done through the application form but you will only be able to submit it once you have received approval.


United Kingdom


Studying at Oxford is a wonderful experience! Rhodes Scholars may read for any full-time postgraduate degree at the University of Oxford, subject to the few Rhodes requirements outlined below:

The basic tenure of the Scholarship is two years, subject always to satisfactory academic performance and personal conduct.

In certain cases, at the discretion of the Academic Committee of the Rhodes Trust and the
Rhodes Trustees, and Scholars may apply for the third year of Scholarship to complete the DPhil, see Notes below.

The Rhodes Scholarship is for not less than two years.
Permitted degrees/degree combinations :

  • A BA with Senior Status (ie done over two years, rather than the normal three) : Scholars who read for a 2nd
    BA may not apply for the third year of Scholarship
  • A one-year taught Master’s course (MSc, MSt, BCL), followed in the second year by another one-year taught
    Master’s course (subject to successful completion of the first course) : Scholars who read two consecutive
    one-year Master’s courses may not apply for the third year of Scholarship
  • A one-year taught Master’s course (MSc, MSt, BCL) : Scholars who read for a one-year taught Master’s
    course may progress to DPhil, and subsequently apply for the third year of Scholarship, subject to the Notes
    below. This progression is not open to Scholars in the Maths, Physical & Life Sciences Division (see below)
  • A two-year MPhil or BPhil (or BCL/MPhil) : Scholars taking the MPhil/BPhil (or the two-year BCL/MPhil route)
    may apply for the third year of Scholarship to read for DPhil, subject to the Notes below.
  • A two-year MSc by research (or MLitt) : Scholars who read a two-year MSc by research may not apply for a
    the third year of Scholarship
  • A three-year DPhil: Scholars entering Oxford direct to DPhil follow the same application process for a third
    year, as described in the Notes below. Please note candidates for a DPhil within the Maths, Physical & Life
    Sciences Division may not take the Master’s route to DPhil, and must apply to start the DPhil in their first year
    in Oxford
  • The MFE (Masters in Financial Economics) and the MBA (Masters in Business Administration) : Scholars may
    only read these degrees in the second year of the Scholarship
  • The MPP-MBA or MPP-MFE combination is not available (that is, neither the MBA nor the MFE may be
    pursued in the second year for those who take the MPP (Masters in Public Policy) in their first year
  • The four-year Accelerated Graduate-Entry course in Medicine is not tenable on the Rhodes Scholarship
  • Four-year DPhil programmes, eg the Centre for Doctoral Training (CDT) and the Doctoral Training Centre
    (DTC) programmes. Scholars may pursue these programmes only if alternative funding is obtained for the
    final (4th) year of the programme. Interested Scholars or applicants should contact : before applying


  •  Nationality/citizenship: You may only apply to the Global Scholarships if you are not eligible to apply via any
    existing Rhodes constituency ( If you have a strong connection to one or more Rhodes constituencies but do not meet their
    eligibility criteria you should also consider inter-jurisdictional consideration rather than the Global Scholarship.
  • Age: You must meet either of the below criteria:
  • On 1 October 2022, you must be at least 18 and have not reached your 24th birthday (i.e. you must have been born after 1 October 1998 and on or before 1 October 2004).
  • Academic achievement: You must have already completed, or will have completed by July 2023, an undergraduate degree (normally a Bachelor’s degree) with an academic background and grade that – at a minimum – meets or exceeds the specific entry requirements of your chosen full-time course at the University of Oxford ( Given the very intense international competition for places at the University of Oxford, candidates will have a greater chance of successful admission to Oxford if they have:
  • A First Class Honours Degree or equivalent, or, A GPA of 3.70/4.0 or higher Please contact the National Secretary if you require further advice about the academic requirements of the Scholarship.
  • English Language: You must have a sufficiently high standard of English and have met, by the application deadline, the English language proficiency requirements (at the Higher Level listed) of the University of–3
  • If unsuccessful in your first application to the Rhodes Scholarships, you may subsequently re-apply only once more (and this must be in the same constituency), subject to meeting the eligibility criteria.OR (for older candidates who completed their first undergraduate degree later than usual)
  • On 1 October 2022, you must not have reached your 27th birthday (i.e. have been born after 1 October 1995) AND you have met or will meet the academic requirements for completing your first undergraduate degree on or after 1 October 2021*

* A university’s policy determines the date of completion of the academic requirement for a degree and this may be
different from when a degree is considered awarded by the university or the date of a graduation ceremony. In

Eligible Regions: Open For All


  • To submit an application for the Global Scholarship, you must obtain a letter of nomination from your university.
    Please note that you cannot nominate yourself. You will need to register the details of an appropriate nominator
    via the application form and you will only be able to submit your application once they have submitted their
    nomination. For more information please see section 4.d.
  • In addition, applications for the Global Scholarship must undergo an eligibility check by Rhodes House staff before
    you can submit your application. Once you have completed the application form you will be able to tick a box
    requesting your eligibility check the Rhodes House team will then complete the check within 2 working days
    and you will be notified by email once this is complete.
  • You can apply online from 01 June 2022 at
    d. You must submit your application online, with all supporting documents, by 23:59 Greenwich Mean Time (GMT),
    01 August 2022. All applications must be submitted online. No alternate method of application is accepted. There
    is no application fee for the submission of the Rhodes Scholarship application form.
  • In preparation for making your application, you should carefully read the information held on the Scholarships tab
    on the Rhodes House website, the Conditions of Tenure for the Rhodes Scholarship, the information in this
    document and the graduate admissions pages of the University of Oxford:
  • Longlisted candidates may be invited to attend a preliminary video interview.
  • Shortlisted candidates will be invited to a social engagement (reception and dinner) and a final interview. You
    must be available to attend both, in person, as no accommodations can be made on the date and time, or the mode, of
    these events. Interviews will be held at Rhodes House, Oxford, UK in November. No candidate will be selected
    without an interview. Candidates for the Scholarship are invited for the final interview and residing outside of the

    The United Kingdom may apply to the Rhodes Global Scholarships Administrator for financial assistance to travel from
    their country of origin, provided that the travel could not be funded by their University or another sponsorship source.
