You wake up on a cool Monday morning and look at yourself in the mirror, what do you see? A thirty something that is good for nothing? You’ve been thinking lately of how rapidly you have aged since 25. Daily, you bear the heavy weight of those thoughts, find your way through to the door of the bathroom; have a shower, wobble through to your bedroom and after applying cream, powder and slight make-up, that horrible feeling creeps in – the feeling of utter despair; of being wasted, of regrets and frustration.
Men and women in their 30s around the world are going through similar situations. You are not alone. But what can help you move on and start living your dream life even at age 35?
Now, i will be very firm with you and sincere with you. Look, the fact that you couldn’t get those jobs because you are 31 and married and probably an expectant mum does not make you less smart, intelligent and creative than you really are. Do something for yourself!
Age is silly, and very tricky. Anyone who wants to make it in life does not set limits based on age. Age is a constant phenomenon; whether you like it or not, you grow older by day and so does everyone. So, your excuse can never be age; think of something else!
If you have concluded that you can never achieve that dream of yours anymore or you are too old to do something good for yourself and make something out of live, just because of some past failures or inactions, then you should learn from the examples of these people who once felt like you.
Great woman you say? Indeed! She is one the few women who “rule”the world and inspire many. Remember the Oprah Winfrey show? Yeah, if she mentions your name in that show by mistake, you’ll feel like you’re next to Queen Elizabeth; that’s how imposing Oprah has become. Yet, Oprah was fired from her first television job as an anchor in Baltimore because “she was unfit for TV”, where she said she faced sexism and harassment. But Oprah rebounded and became the undisputed queen of television talk shows before amassing a media empire. Today, she is worth an estimated $2.9 billion.
I bet you know Disney! Before Walt Disney became the success he is today, he had a rough start and at a point he almost gave up on himself. Disney was fired by a newspaper editor because “he lacked imagination and had no good ideas”. Imagine that. After that, Disney started a number of businesses that didn’t last long and ended with bankruptcy and failure. Yet, the poor man did not commit suicide; he persisted and eventually found a formula of success that worked for him. Today, Disney makes billions from his merchandise, movies and theme parks around the world.
Even if you don’t read novels, Harry Potter should sound familiar. When she wrote her first novel at 32, it was rejected by seven publishing houses; she was a poor single mother trying hard to provide for herself and child, yet, she didn’t allow those rejections to deter her. Today, Rowling’s novel is not only one of the most famous books ever; she is the 12th richest woman in the UK.
That name is fast becoming a house-hold name. But what I didn’t know until recently is that Bill Gate couldn’t make any money at first. Yet, he is the richest person in the world today. Gate’s first attempt could have failed miserably. But he did not quit there; he kept trying before hitting it big with Microsoft.
He wept bitterly after being cut from his high school basket team. But Michael Jordan didn’t allow this setback stop him from playing basketball. Perhaps Jordan himself can best describe his failures over the years “I have failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed”.
Age is nothing but number. Stand up, see beyond your age and your grey hair and nothing will stop you from shining and achieving your dreams. And all the best too.
